A mining pool can eliminate most of its storage mass by setting its cashout threshold higher than a typical coinbase output. A coinbase output is the block reward a pool earns each time one of its miners finds a block; individually these outputs are small. Storage mass grows when a transaction spends many small inputs at once. By waiting to pay miners until the accumulated reward exceeds a single coinbase output in size, the pool consolidates inputs before spending them, keeping storage mass low per transaction.
